What should be an uncontroversial pro-life ad on buses in Canada is making abortion activists angry.
The ad, sponsored by Sudbury Right to Life, displays the message, “Take my hand, not my life,” and shows a baby reaching for a parent’s hand, according to Sudbury.com.
Abortion supporters in the community expressed outrage online after Sudbury in Ontario permitted the ad on its city buses, the report states. In a post online Jan. 18, Brittany Tate published a photo of the ad and complained that it would “shame” women. Her post attracted hundreds of comments, many of them from abortion activists who shared her anger.
“Can someone please explain to me how this is okay?” Tate wrote. “It’s one thing to have an opinion, a complete other to purchase an advertisement for the side of a public city bus in order to shame women (I might add, women from various different situations, environments, backgrounds etc.) for abortions.”
She told the local news that the pro-life ad “instantly appalled” her, and it projects a bad image on the city.
“It made me very emotional, angry, upset and ultimately disappointed that this was allowed on a public transit bus,” Tate continued.
A spokesperson for the city said it approved the ad in accordance with federal regulations, and those who object should contact Advertising Standards Canada.
“The City of Greater Sudbury does not endorse any particular group or message found on its advertising assets,” the city said in a statement. “Under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the City cannot refuse or remove advertising, provided the ad content complies with the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards.”

Abortion activists have been lobbying cities for years to reject or remove pro-life ads from public transportation across Canada.
In 2020, the City of Guelph caved to abortion activists’ demands to remove bus ads educating the public about the humanity of the unborn child. The ad showed a pregnant woman on one side and a woman holding a newborn baby on the other along with the message: “Human rights should not depend on where you are. Say no to abortion.”
Three years earlier, a bus driver in Peterborough refused to drive a bus with a pro-life ad on it. The ad stated: “Abortion kills children: End the killing” and showed images of unborn babies at seven weeks and 16 weeks.
That same year, the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform sued the City of Grande Prairie for rejecting its ads on transit buses after the city claimed the pro-life ads would hurt women.
