The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Wednesday urged President Joe Biden to stop supporting the “injustice of abortion.” The USCCB released the statement on its website.
Biden has touted himself as a devout Catholic who cares about the most vulnerable in society. But the Democrat leader also hypocritically champions positions that contradict the teachings of his faith and jeopardize the lives and freedoms of millions of Americans, the worst being his plans to expand abortions and force taxpayers to fund them.
In the statement Wednesday, USCCB president Archbishop José Gomez began by offering prayers of hope and wisdom for Biden as he begins to lead the country.
Later, he brought up concerns that Catholic leaders have with Biden’s plans for abortion and religious liberties.
“… as pastors, the nation’s bishops are given the duty of proclaiming the Gospel in all its truth and power, in season and out of season, even when that teaching is inconvenient or when the Gospel’s truths run contrary to the directions of the wider society and culture,” Gomez wrote. “So, I must point out that our new President has pledged to pursue certain policies that would advance moral evils and threaten human life and dignity, most seriously in the areas of abortion, contraception, marriage, and gender. Of deep concern is the liberty of the Church and the freedom of believers to live according to their consciences.”
The archbishop said protecting unborn babies from abortion will continue to be a “preeminent priority” for Catholics.
“We have deep concerns about many threats to human life and dignity in our society. But as Pope Francis teaches, we cannot stay silent when nearly a million unborn lives are being cast aside in our country year after year through abortion,” Gomez continued. “Abortion is a direct attack on life that also wounds the woman and undermines the family.”

Gomez pointed out how abortions disproportionately destroy the lives of poor and minority children and children with disabilities.
“Rather than impose further expansions of abortion and contraception, as he has promised, I am hopeful that the new President and his administration will work with the Church and others of good will” and support a “coherent family policy” that supports the most vulnerable, the archbishop said.
The Religion News Service reports Pope Francis also wrote a message to Biden on inauguration day, asking God to guide the new president in bringing about peace and reconciliation.
“Under your leadership, may the American people continue to draw strength from the lofty political, ethical and religious values that have inspired the nation since its founding,” the pope wrote.
Biden and Democrat leaders are pushing for more abortions despite strong public objections. Among other things, they want to end the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding for elective abortions in Medicaid and other federal programs. Without it, taxpayers could be forced to pay for tens of thousands of unborn babies’ abortion deaths every year.
Last year, Biden even called abortion an “essential medical service” during the coronavirus pandemic. His health care plan would expand abortions as well by forcing insurance companies to cover abortions as “essential” health care under Obamacare.
He also promised to undo all of President Donald Trump’s progress for life, including restoring funding to the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood.
Additionally, Biden has endorsed anti-religious freedom policies that would force nuns, religious charities and hospitals to violate their deeply-held beliefs by funding the killing of unborn babies in abortions and potentially even by helping to facilitate their deaths. He promised to restore an Obama-era mandate that would force the nuns with Little Sisters of the Poor and other religious employers to fund contraception, including types that may cause abortions, in their employee health insurance plans.
