Catholic Professors Largely Silent on Joe Biden’s Plans to Promote Abortion, Fund Planned Parenthood

Few Catholic professors seem willing to discuss President Joe Biden’s Catholic faith and his contradictory positions on abortion and the sanctity of every human life.

The College Fix noticed their reluctance when it contacted 14 professors recently to ask about the new president.

Biden has touted himself as a devout Catholic who cares about the most vulnerable in society. But the Democrat leader also hypocritically champions positions that contradict the teachings of his faith and jeopardize the lives and freedoms of millions of Americans, the worst being his plans to expand abortions and force taxpayers to fund them.

The Fix contacted American Catholic leaders to ask about Biden’s faith and his plans to “codify” Roe v. Wade into federal law and restore taxpayer funding to the Planned Parenthood abortion chain.

Just two agreed to comment.

One was C.C. Pecknold, an associate professor of theology at the Catholic University of America, and the other was Professor Nathan Schlueter, a professor of theology and philosophy at Hillsdale College. Both emphasized that Biden’s pro-abortion position conflicts with the faith that he professes.

He “has already indicated by his advocacy of abortion that he is not in full communion with the Catholic Church,” Pecknold said. “He has already stated his intention to codify Roe in such a way as to prevent any seeking to challenge the law, and he will most certainly reverse the Mexico City Policy as the Obama-Biden administration did before.”

The Mexico City Policy prohibits international aid funding to groups that promote and/or provide abortions overseas. Trump reinstated and later expanded the policy to cut off more streams of revenue to international pro-abortion groups. His actions defunded the International Planned Parenthood Federation of about $100 million and the British abortion chain Marie Stopes International (now MSI Reproductive Choices) of about $73 million in U.S. tax dollars.

The two pro-abortion groups received millions of American tax dollars under President Barack Obama, and they are expected to receive millions more under Biden’s leadership.

“It’s harder to say what Biden will do that agrees with Catholic social teaching,” Pecknold said, noting that Biden has shown “very little respect for the 80 million Americans who did not vote for him.”

“That being said, Catholics are called to pray for our leaders, and even for those who persecute us — from within or without. So I will be praying for President-Elect Biden, most especially for his conversion on abortion,” Pecknold said.

Schlueter told The Fix that he also is concerned about how Biden’s positions conflict with the Catholic Church, especially on marriage and abortion.

“I’m afraid I don’t see any issues where Biden will improve on Trump – religious liberty, abortion, marriage, care for the poor, etc. – although I do hope that Biden will speak with more civility and care, which is not nothing,” he said.

The remaining 12 professors either did not respond or declined to comment to The Fix. The conservative news outlet said the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops also did not respond to its three emails seeking comments.

Biden and Democrat leaders are pushing for more abortions despite strong public objections. Among other things, they want to end the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding for elective abortions in Medicaid and other federal programs. Without it, taxpayers could be forced to pay for tens of thousands of unborn babies’ abortion deaths every year.

Last year, Biden even called abortion an “essential medical service” during the coronavirus pandemic. His health care plan would expand abortions as well by forcing insurance companies to cover abortions as “essential” health care under Obamacare.

He also promised to undo all of President Donald Trump’s progress for life, including restoring funding to the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood.

Additionally, Biden has endorsed anti-religious freedom policies that would force nuns, religious charities and hospitals to violate their deeply-held beliefs by funding the killing of unborn babies in abortions and potentially even by helping to facilitate their deaths. He promised to restore an Obama-era mandate that would force the nuns with Little Sisters of the Poor and other religious employers to fund contraception, including types that may cause abortions, in their employee health insurance plans.
