Donald Trump Is Poised To Strike Back Against Establishment Republicans

The squishy Republican types in Congress better get ready to fight like hell for their seats during the 2022 primary season. Former President Donald Trump is poised to strike back at establishment GOP lawmakers who wish to regain their influence over the party and his war chest is full to the brim.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has plenty of cash that he intends to use to oust his opponents in the Republican Party. He recently launched a new political action committee whose objective is to ensure that authentic conservative candidates make it to Congress.

From the Journal:

Former President Donald Trump started the year with at least $31 million in cash to wield through his new political-action committee as he seeks to remain the leader of the Republican Party.

The money is in the coffers of Mr. Trump’s newly formed leadership PAC called Save America, which in the weeks after the Nov. 3 election began receiving donations in response to fundraising messages asking for money to overturn his election loss.

The Journal also noted that the former president already has an idea as to how he will use the funds. The author wrote:

Mr. Trump could use the money to support his preferred candidates or back primary rivals to Republicans he is unhappy with. He has privately expressed interest in unseating the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach him alleging he incited the mob to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6 and prevent Congress from certifying President Biden’s victory.

The civil war on the right is already in full swing as various factions are moving to position themselves as the leaders of the conservative movement and the Republican Party. The establishment is pushing to drag the party back to the days of Romney and Bush. Conversely, the non-establishment wing of the movement seeks to move the party forward into an organization that genuinely represents conservatism instead of embracing the Diet Democrat ways of pre-Trump era leadership.

The Democrats’ second impeachment attempt seems to be the starting point for the effort to remove establishment Republicans from office. As the Journal noted, Save America will likely target lawmakers who voted in favor of impeachment in what might appear to be an effort to exact revenge on these individuals. Still, it is worth noting that those who joined with the Democrats in creating the next impeachment circus are bonafide members of the establishment that has sought to push Trump out of influence even before the election.

Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) plight is only an example of what we can expect to see over the next two years. After she voted to impeach Trump, she has fallen out of favor with right-leaning voters. Even worse for her, a viable challenger has arisen to unseat her. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is leading the effort to encourage voters to vote her out during the primaries.

It is important to remember that even with the party turning against the establishment, a reimagining of the GOP will only work if the rank-and-file conservatives get involved. None of Trump’s efforts to unseat these lawmakers will work if we to show up during the primaries in full force. Indeed, our absence is what the establishment has counted on for decades.

The midterm elections are two years away. But this does not mean we should rest on our laurels. We must be ready to show up when it counts. Otherwise, we might just see a return to the days of the neocon establishment that is more interested in pleasing the left than working for their constituents.
